Legendary satirist Gerald Scarfe talks to PORT about his years at Private Eye and working on Pink Floyd’s The Wall
To coincide with the opening of the Private Eye: the first 50 years exhibition at the V & A museum, cartoonist and satirist Gerald Scarfe chats exclusively from his studio in his London home to PORT’s editor-at-large John-Paul Pryor.
The revered artist talks about how misuses of power and authority and the narrow line between life and death influence his work, the controversies of his illustrations and the freedom and honesty with which he drew at Private Eye.
Private Eye: the first 50 years explores the published and promoted works of over ninety featured artists, many of whom began their careers at the magazine. Illustrations take the form of political and social captions, caricatures and long-running strips – just what you’d expect from Private Eye.
